There are differing opinions on meditation music and if it can actually help you to go into the state of meditation or if it simply gets in the way. I think that this depends a lot on the type of meditation you are attempting or to be more exact on which method or technique you will be using to get into the state of meditation.

The conventional styles of Zen meditation and to a certain extent some of the Buddhist meditations are some of the most popular techniques. The objective of these meditations is to enter into a state of nothingness and the use of meditation music is not actually that suitable here. You really need to just permit any kind of thoughts or distractions emerge in your mind and float away without you exploring them or becoming attached to them.

There are a great deal of other more contemporary meditation techniques that just require you become as relaxed as possible and center yourself. It is these meditations that really gain from using meditation music. The music has such a calming effect that you will find it so much easier to get into that special meditative space and you won’t become distracted by the music in any way, essentially it will allow you to detach from the world around you.

There are also guided meditations where there is a voice giving instructions on how to mediate which are most often recorded with a relaxing meditation music in the background. These can be a good way to go into the mediative state for beginners as you don’t really need to do anything except pay attention to the voice and the music, follow the instructions and allow yourself to become engrossed in the world of fantasy that is being created.

It can be very easy to go into a profound state of meditation during one of the many cathartic meditation techniques like those presented by Osho. The meditation music is a key element of these meditations.

There is a lot of information on the Web on how to meditate but for more details on the music side of it then check out my Meditation Music website.
